How to Find and Remove Asbestos in Your Garage

[lwptoc]

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos was a very low-cost and easy-to-install building material used by tradespeople in the 60s, 70s & 80s. The three primary fibres that can be found in asbestos are; blue (crocidolite), brown (amosite) and white (chrysotile). Asbestos can mostly be found in roof sheets used in structures such as garages, and often are found in flat sheets for partitions, cladding and facings.

Why Is Asbestos In The Garage a Problem?

When a product that contains asbestos becomes damaged, the fibres are released into the air. These fibres become breathable, and when taken in, they can become substantial health risks to whoever is breathing the fibres. After research, it has been proven that exposure to asbestos can cause;

Plural Disease

Pleural plaques and pleural thickening are non-cancerous conditions affecting the outer lining of the lungs (the pleura).

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs or, more rarely, the lining of the abdomen (known as peritoneal mesothelioma).

Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a type of pulmonary (lung) scarring of the lungs caused by inhaling asbestos fibres or dust, often through exposure at work.

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the lungs. Your lungs are two spongy organs in your chest that take in oxygen when you inhale and release carbon dioxide when you exhale.

How to remove asbestos from your garage?

When removing asbestos from your garage, you should always contact a professional for consultancy and for them to carry out the work. However, if you are to do it yourself, these are the steps you should follow. Once you are sure the panels contain asbestos, the first call of action is to plan how you dispose of them.

When removing the sheets, you should always keep the sheets wet, and this reduces the risk of fibres escaping in the dust created if the sheets are to become broken, you should NEVER break up the sheets. Always dispose of them as a whole. After you remove the sheets and find that they are held in place by fasteners, bolts, and fixings, you should dispose of them too. Always lower the panels and never drop them; this once again reduces the risk of dust becoming present in the air and releasing asbestos.

How to dispose of asbestos?

Before disposing of the asbestos, always clean the tools used to remove the sheets. This stops you from carrying around contaminated devices. If the sheets are too big to be put into disposable bags, you should always place them in a lockable skip and ensure the contents of the skip are known.

 When a lockable skip isn’t required, you must use 1000-gauge polythene sheeting and seal the bag. Like the skip, you should always display warning stickers to let everyone know it contains asbestos. Once the asbestos is managed correctly, you should always use transport by a registered waste carrier that has the correct vehicle type to take them away to the appropriate asbestos sites.
