Keeping your garage dust free can be frustrating, especially for those who have transformed their garage space into home gyms and home offices. Read our blog on how to keep your garage dust free.

What Causes a Dusty Garage?

Dust is often caused by the various components that form concrete. When these components become imbalanced, the concrete deteriorates at a faster rate, resulting in weak concrete that can generate dust.

Other dust culprits include:

  • Debris and material such as leaves breaking down
  • Pet fur
  • Hair
  • Dead skin

What Causes Concrete to Dust?

If you have a bare concrete floor in your garage, there are some factors that might cause dust.

Moisture

Moisture from water, oil spills or chemicals can all start to break the surface of your concrete floor down.

Temperature

Concrete can expand and contract slightly with changes in heat. This can be a problem, particularly in colder weather.

Abrasion

Physical contact with the concrete surface from everyday use such as driving your car in or walking across the floor can start to wear it down.

How do I get rid of garage dust?

Clear out the dust in your concrete garage by giving it a thorough cleaning. Grab a dust cloth to wipe away any dust build-up, focusing on the walls and floor. Use for a vacuum cleaner over a broom to prevent dust from scattering everywhere.

If you use your garage for storage and have a lot of items in there, it’s a good idea to set aside some time to declutter your garage before you begin cleaning so that there’s less dust and fewer areas for dust to cling to.

How do I Prevent a Dusty Garage?

Dust builds up quickly even after a thorough cleaning, so we recommend maintaining your garage and using a concrete coating to seal the surface. Properly sealed concrete should prevent excess dust in your garage.

For extra protection, you might also consider fitting a door seal to help prevent debris from being brought into your garage.

Dust is a problem for many of us and you’ll never completely eradicate it but following these steps should make a big difference and allow you to start enjoying your concrete garage again.
