Transform your garage on a budget

Posted on: by Dencroft Garages

Garage conversions are becoming increasingly popular as a great way to add value to your home if you are thinking of selling further along the line. If you’re not planning to move house, they are a great way to extend the living space within your property without the hassle.

The team here at Dencroft often speak to customers who don’t feel they are maximising the potential of their concrete garage but are limited on budget. There are plenty of tasks that can be done without breaking the bank that can transform the space. Here are a few options:

Get out the scrubbing brush

Garages frequently get neglected when we do a deep cleaning of our homes. If your garage space is starting to look dusty or dirty, a thorough cleaning from top to bottom will make a huge difference.

A lick of paint

It may not sound like a revolutionary idea but painting the walls and floors inside your garage will give it more personality and make it look more professional. White paint on the walls and grey on the floor will give your garage an extra lease of life whilst making it look more spacious than it is.

Be organised

There is nothing more disruptive and dysfunctional than an unorganised garage. Picture this – you’re already running late for work and it’s the first time your car is frozen over this year, but you can’t find your scraper. Why? Because it’s been thrown in a random drawer at the back of a cluttered garage.

Don’t let this be you, be sure to keep your garage properly organised and tidy. Make all the tools you need easily accessible and obvious as to where you’re going to store them and keep seasonal items such as the box of Christmas decorations safely out of the way when you don’t need them.

Install lighting

Not only will this job make your garage look a lot better, but it’ll also improve safety as a well-lit space will reduce the risk of falls and trips. This job can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. If you use your garage frequently for work or for hobbies, we recommend investing in some high-quality lighting such as LED – which will be expensive at first but if you’re in there for long periods of time, it will end up being a more cost-effective option.

Fan and heater

As you will know, a garage can be unbearably cold in the winter months, but if you install a heater in your garage, it will help you to combat the issue. If you have the budget, insulating your garage will help keep the heat inside whilst reducing the cost of energy bills.

In the summer, a fan will not only help keep the heat down, but it also has the added bonus of keeping the air flowing.

Garage conversion options

If you want to get more use out of your garage but you’re not sure what the best option is or you’re stuck for ideas, here are some popular choices:

  • Home gym– no membership fees, no waiting for equipment, no more excuses not to go.
  • Office– great if you work from home or just need a place to keep work separate from home life.
  • Games room- darts, table tennis, snooker table or even games consoles.
  • Extra living space- ideal if you have guests or want a separate place to relax away from the kids.
  • Mancave- get yourself a beer fridge and a TV and you’re halfway there!
